Topic: Anti-Vax: 19th Century Insights into a Modern Healthcare Issue

Speaker: Jacob Canfield (School of Medicine)

Opposition and fear have surrounded vaccinations since their implementation in Britain during the early 19th century. Many of the initial arguments 19th century "anti-vaxxers" made against vaccination practices reflect the same concerns many individuals have regarding vaccinations in the United States today. By investigating early vaccines and the anti-vaccination movements surrounding them, I hope to provide a fresh perspective on this continually relevant issue of modern healthcare.

Jacob Canfield is the winner of the 2019 Danny Jones History of the Health Sciences Essay Award. He is a first year medical student from Fort Worth, a graduate of Texas A&M University Commerce, and is involved with Frontera de Salud and Access Care Texas at UT Health San Antonio. Jacob loves nature, history, and fossil hunting!

*Light refreshments will be served.
